Title: | Fish fauna of the Bavicora Basin, Chihuahua, Mexico |
Author: | Stefferud, J.A. and Propst, D. L. |
Abstract: | Introductions of nonnative fish species and modification of habitats have caused alteration and decline of native fish communities in many North American desert basins (Miller, 1978; Williams et al., 1985; Rinne and Minckley, 1991; Contreras-B. and Lozano-V., 1994). However, the endorheic Laguna de Bavicora (hereinafter Bavicora) Basin in west-central Chihuahua, Mexico retains an intact native fish fauna comprised of three cyprinids: Mexican stoneroller, Campostoma ornatum, beautiful shiner, Cyprinella formosa, and an undescribed chub, Gila sp. (Smith and Miller, 1986). Each is present in adjacent drainages on either side of the Continental Divide, and their distribution and status in these was previously reported (Hendrickson et al., 1981; Propst and Stefferud, 1994). Here we provide information on their distribution and status in the Bavicora Basin with notes on habitats and zoogeographic relationships. |
