Description: | The superficial rainfall run-off during 1990 and 1991 caused considerable flooding in the villages around the Bustillos Lagoon which has no outlet. With the purpose to evacuate this stored water and to utilize it for agricultural purposes, PONDERCEL Chihuahua and the Experimental Farm CESICH prepared a study to investigate the possibility of irrigating bean crops with residual water from the Bustillos Lagoon. In 1992, with the above mentioned purpose, a study was undertaken from July till October in a field planted with cv Pinto Villa. Ten different fertilizer rates were applied to the sandy soil. The data obtained from this complete randomized block design were analyzed with the variance and economic analysis. The physical and chemical characteristics of the soil, and water quality were determined. The bean grain crop was analyzed for the heavy elements Pb, Cd, Ni, Co, and Cr. The best bean kernel yield, 913.8 kg ha-1, and dry matter yield, 926.9 kg ha-1, were obtained with the fertilizer rate 80-50-0, which had a production cost of $360.00 ha-1 (pesos) , generating a net profit of $1603.00 ha-1, and had a 503 % marginal return. The production efficiency was 0.17 kg of kernels for each cubic meter of water pumped from the Bustillos Lagoon. The bean crop received 40.0 cm of water from five irrigations 8.0 cm each, and 12.24 cm of rainfall. The concentration of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Ni, Co, and Cr) both in the irrigation water and in the soil used, as well as in the plant and in the kernel, was insignificant. |
